The work consists of a guided tour in the corridors of Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milano, Italy, of which Marianne Heier is a former student. In Oslo the tour is transposed to the ‘bank hall’ of the now closed former Museum of Contemporary Art.

Cast copies of famous sculptures are fundamental in the art academy teaching tradition. They ground the institution’s activities in the classical art canon, and different selections and editions can be found in almost all Western European art-educational institutions and museums. In the artist’s monologue, the heroic undertone of the sculptures and the mythologies they represent are the starting point for a study in civil courage throughout time and space. Read through our current political climate, the phantom-like works from a lost era re-appear as relevant and effective. Critiques of power, gender and identity are central to the stories behind them, and relate them directly to our current political movements. Indirectly the work also poses questions about ownership, and the power to define art history, and which interests it can be instrumentalised to serve. In Heier’s work, the stories behind the iconic Accademia cast collection, displayed in the school’s hallways and shared spaces, are interpreted and performed as stories of communities and commons. They represent basic forms or archetypes, an aesthetic and political vocabulary we still utilise and refer to, often without being aware of it. Thus, their continued relevance is enacted through us.

The monologue presented by the guide borrows from the narratives of classical mythology, and juxtaposes them with quotes from modern manifestos and speeches. The title is borrowed from the last flyer produced by the student resistance group ‘die Weiße Rose’. It was distributed over München from allied forces’ planes in July 1943, after several of the group’s core members were executed by the Nazis. Through this title, the performance directly addresses itself to today’s youth, to students of art, and passes on the stories carried by these classical sculptures to those who own the future.

Gipskopier av ikoniske skulpturer er grunnleggende i tradisjonell kunstakademisk utdanning. De forankrer kunstinstitusjonenes virksomhet i den klassiske kunstkanonen, og forskjellige utvalg og utgaver finnes ved nærmest alle vesentlige europeiske kunstutdanningsinstitusjoner og museer. I guidens monolog blir den heroiske grunntonen i skulpturene utgangspunkt for en studie i sivilt mot gjennom tid og rom. Lest opp mot våre dagers politiske klima, gjenoppstår de spøkelsesaktige verkene fra en annen tid som relevante og virksomme. Maktkritikk, kjønnsproblematikk og identitet er sentrale i historien bak flere av dem, og knytter an til vår tids politiske spørsmål. Indirekte stiller verket også spørsmål om eierskap og definisjonsmakt til historien om kunsten, og hvilke interesser den skal tjene. I Heiers arbeid blir historiene bak kunsthistoriens ikoniske verk lest som fellesskapets fortellinger. De er grunnformer eller arketyper, et estetisk og politisk vokabular vi stadig refererer til, ofte uten å være klar over det selv. De lever videre gjennom oss.

Guidens monolog låner mesteparten av narrativet fra klassisk mytologi, og kryssklipper det med sitater fra politiske manifester og taler. Tittelen er lånt fra det siste flygebladet til studentmotstandsgruppa die Weiße Rose. Det ble spredd over München fra de alliertes fly i juli 1943, etter at flere av gruppas sentrale medlemmer var blitt halshugd av nazistene. Slik henvender performancen seg til de unge, til kunststudentene ved Brera og Prosjektskolen, og sender historiene bak skulpturene i samlingen videre til de som eier fremtiden.

«ACT» is a concrete study of how the legal system and the legislation work, what shapes them and what their consequences are. Heier was invited produce an artwork for the new Domus Juridica (Faculty of Law) in Oslo. She chose to make almost the entire production budget available to NOAS (Norwegian Organization for Asylum Seekers). They have used the funds to produce legal cases for a number of law suits they bring to the State on behalf of stateless persons currently living in Norway.

«ACT» treats the legislation as plastic, sculptural material in constant change. The project illuminates and activates the mechanisms governing legislation, and pushes the boundaries of the law.

The work consists of hardcover books containing all the documents produced within the legal cases in question on a Larvikite stone plinth in the faculty’s library, a speech, a poster in 300 copies, a contribution to a possible law change, and perhaps a concrete change in at least four people's lives.

«ACT» er en undersøkelse av hvordan rettsapparatet og lovgivningen fungerer i praksis, hva som former dem og hvilke konsekvenser det får. Heier ble invitert til å utsmykke det nye Domus Juridica i Oslo, og valgte å stille nesten hele produksjonsbudsjettet til rådighet for NOAS (Norsk Organisasjon for Asylsøkere). De har benyttet midlene til å produsere saksanlegg for en rekke saker de fører overfor Staten på vegne av statsløse i Norge.

«ACT» behandler lovverket som plastisk, skulpturelt materiale i stadig endring. Det belyser og aktiverer mekanismene som styrer lovgivning og rettsfølelse, og skyver på lovens yttergrenser.

Verket består av en bunke skinninbundne bøker med sakspapirer tilhørende rettssakene plassert på larvikittsokkel, en tale, en plakat i 300 eksemplarer, et bidrag til en mulig lovendring, og kanskje en konkret endring i minst fire menneskers liv.

Gaute Brochmann om kunsten i Domus Juridica

"O" has no beginning or end, but is circular in shape, both spatially and timewise. The work is intended as a continuous and horizontal, rolling landscape that exists independently of any defining gaze.

The supporting element is a monologue written and performed by Heier. The text draws on classic feminist texts like Simone de Beauvoir's "The Other Sex", Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of The Rights of Woman" and Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique", mixed with references from rock music and occult formulas. The monologue is, in its entirety, pronounced from the point of view of ‘the other’, expressing the paradox of an implicit, internalized division between subject and object, the individual and the collective. The work describes 'the female' from the inside, as a physical, first-hand experience that shapes the world and the I, and not as an object described from the outside or an exception from a male norm. The work puts the verifiable forms of knowledge, associated with the male, rational and dynamic, and the intuitive, instinctive, emotional associated with the female, animal, sexual, unstable, on the same level, challenging these hierarchies of gender and knowledge through language and movement.

«O» er sirkulær i form, både romlig og tidsmessig, og har ingen begynnelse eller slutt. Verket er tenkt som et kontinuerlig og horisontalt, bølgende landskap som eksisterer uavhengig av definerende blikk.

Det bærende elementet er en monolog, skrevet og fremført av Heier. Teksten trekker veksler på klassiske feministiske tekster som Simone de Beauvoirs «Det annet kjønn», Mary Wollstonecrafts «A Vindication of The Rights of Woman» og Betty Friedan’s «The Feminine Mystique», blandet med referanser fra rockemusikk og okkulte formler. Monologen er i sin helhet uttalt fra ’den andres’ ståsted, og uttrykker det paradoksale i en implisitt, internalisert splittelse mellom subjekt og objekt, det individuelle og det kollektive. Verket beskriver ’det kvinnelige’ fra innsiden, som en fysisk, førstehånds erfaring som former verden og jeg-et, og ikke som et objekt beskrevet fra utsiden eller et avvik fra en mannlig norm. Her likestilles de etterprøvbare formene for kunnskap, assosiert med det mannlige, rasjonelle og handlekraftige, og de intuitive, instinktive, emosjonelle formene for kunnskap, assosiert med det kvinnelige, dyriske, seksuelle, ustabile, og passive. «O» utfordrer disse innarbeidede kjønns- og kunnskapshierarkiene gjennom språk språk og bevegelse.

Heier looks for ghosts and specters in her own family history and uses what she finds as a starting point to explore the flexible, unreliable contours of the notion of 'we'. Observing and commenting on the journey of things from hand to hand through time, she freely speculates about our connection to them and the impact property has on our identity. What and who is left behind when history is written, which bodies and experiences disappear, and where do things go after they vanish? The family's (not always trustworthy) anecdotes are crossed with political and legal facts taken from feminist history, as well as references from theater (Ibsen, Shakespeare, Euripides) and the entertainment industry (film/TV, magic). The story of the magic trick To Saw A Woman In Two contrasts with the work of the Suffragettes and connects to the trope of the Dead Woman in the film industry. The performance is based on a monologue in 5 chapters and is performed by Heier herself in the form of speech, song and actions.

A power point presentation with archival images and literary quotes acts as a formal and conceptual structure alongside the monologue and is also the only light source in the otherwise empty room. Heirlooms from Heier's own family and other objects are used as props: an old soup bowl is smashed, a 2,500-year-old silver coin is embedded in the wall as an amulet, a rusty saw and a glowing finger are used as pointers. The dreamlike, slightly surreal tone of the work is emphasized by Heier’s costume: an old-fashioned, long nightgown, worn with an old wall clock like a rucksack on her back. The performance ends with the video projection of a smoldering fire in a forest as the room fills with smoke.

Heier leter etter spøkelser og gjenferd i sin egen familiehistorie og bruker det hun finner som utgangspunkt for å utforske de fleksible, upålitelige konturene av forestillingen om et ‘vi’. Hun observerer og kommenterer tingenes reise fra hånd til hånd gjennom tiden, og spekulerer fritt rundt vår tilknytning til dem og hvilken innvirkning eiendom har på vår identitet. Hva og hvem står igjen når historien skrives, hvilke kropper og opplevelser forsvinner, og hvor blir de av etter at de forsvinner? Familiens (ikke alltid troverdige) anekdoter krysses med politiske og juridiske fakta hentet fra feministisk historie, samt referanser fra teater (Ibsen, Shakespeare, Euripides) og underholdningsindustrien (film/TV, magi). Historien om tryllekunsttrikset ‘To Saw A Woman In Two’ settes opp mot Suffragettenes arbeid og knytter seg til klisjeen om den døde kvinnen i filmindustrien.

Forestillingen er basert på en monolog i 5 kapitler og fremføres av Heier selv i form av tale, sang og handlinger. En power point-presentasjon med arkivbilder og litterære sitater fungerer som formell og konseptuell struktur ved siden av monologen og er også den eneste lyskilden i det ellers mørke rommet. Arvegods fra Heiers egen familie og andre gjenstander brukes som rekvisitter: en gammel suppetallerken knuses, en 2500 år gammel sølvmynt støpes inn i veggen som en amulett, en rusten sag og en lysende finger brukes som pekere. Den drømmeaktige, litt surrealistiske tonen i verket understrekes av Heiers kostyme: en gammeldags, lang nattkjole, med et gammelt veggur båret som ryggsekk. Forestillingen avsluttes med videoprojeksjon av en ulmende brann i en skog mens rommet fylles av røyk.

Inspired by Gian Paolo Lomazzo's fresco of The Fall of Simon Magus, the performance consists of a monologue in 8 short chapters, performed with a choreography of stylized gestures. Heier recites the text as speech, song and rule, and addresses the audience directly. Each chapter represents a new 'station' in a tour of the central staircase in the building all the way up to the top floor. The audience is constantly invited to follow, before they are finally released after Simon (Heier) has taken them as far as he can. During the performance Heier’s perspective keeps changing. She speaks alternately as herself, Simon, Gian Paolo Lomazzo, Field Marshal Günther von Kluge, Ikaros and Amelia Earhart. She quotes from the Bible, Lomazzo's art theoretical texts, Zizek's "In Defense of Lost Causes", Hesiod, The Egyptian Book of the Dead, Talking Heads and several others. The monologue picks up and follows thoughts, ideas and clues that have been abbandoned throughout history. What would they lead to if they had prevailed? Which forces get to shape history and our relationship to the concepts of "good" and "evil"? The aim of the work is to contemplate notions of different, sometimes fantastic and surrealistic scenarios as alternatives to the current world order. By showing how other choices (political, poetic, aesthetic, economic) would lead to radically different realities, the work presents the status quo as a construction built through conscious and unconscious choices. Thus, it can also be discussed, rethought and reorganized. As Naomi Klein says about the ongoing pandemic and the crisis that follows it: To kick the door of radical possibility open. The time is now.

En monolog i 8 korte kapitler, inspirert av Gian Paolo Lomazzos frescomaleri av Simon Magus. Teksten akkompagneres av en rekke stiliserte gester. Målet med verket er å tvinge frem forestillinger om andre, av og til fantastiske og surrealistiske scenarioer som alternativer til den verdensordenen vi lever med i dag. Ved å vise hvordan andre valg (politiske, poetiske, estetiske, økonomiske) ville ført til radikalt andre virkeligheter, tydeliggjør verket status quo som en konstruksjon bygget av bevisste og ubevisste valg. Dermed kan den også diskuteres, tenkes om og omorganiseres. Som Naomi Klein sier om den pågående pandemien og krisen som følger den: To kick the door of radical possibility open. The time is now.


The beautiful, historic Theatre Hall in Rjukanhuset frames this performance. For an entire working week, Heier reads aloud from selected books from the unique book collection of The Red Library at Rjukan. The texts have been selected in collaboration with the librarians and the readings are open to the public every day from 9.00 to 16.00.

The Red Library is a collection of international socialist literature built by librarian Henrik J. Hjartøy in the period 1917 – 1936. It consists of around 8,000 titles and describes visions and plans for a future that never materialized. During WWII, large parts of the collection were hidden away, and The Red Library today contains a number of unique copies of books that otherwise went lost in the nazi book burnings. By retrieving these texts and giving them a physical voice, Heier wants to reactivate the poetic and political potential they still contain. Are they still relevant to our time, or have they fallen asleep for good?

Den vakre, historiske Teatersalen i Rjukanhuset rammer inn performancen. I en hel arbeidsuke leser Heier høyt fra den unike boksamlingen til Det røde biblioteket på Rjukan.Tekstene er valgt ut i samarbeid med bibliotekarene og opplesningene er åpne for publikum hver dag fra 9.00 til 16.00.

Det Røde Biblioteket er en samling internasjonal sosialistisk litteratur. Det er grunnlagt og bygget opp av bibliotekar Henrik J. Hjartøy i perioden 1917 – 1936. Samlingen består av rundt 8000 titler og beskriver visjoner og planer for en fremtid som aldri ble noe av. Under andre verdenskrig ble store deler av samlingen gjemt bort, og Det Røde Bibliotek inneholder i dag en rekke unike kopier av bøker som ellers gikk tapt i de nazistiske bokbrenningene.Ved å hente frem disse tekstene og gi dem en fysisk stemme, ønsker Heier å aktivere det poetiske og politiske potensialet de fortsatt inneholder.Er de stadig relevante for vår tid, eller har de sovnet for godt?
