Late Night Bar/ Europa

A site specific intervention in the area around the Market Place in Loughborough (UK). The intervention was commissioned by RADAR at Loughborough University.

The performance took its title from the light sign of a closed down night club. It took place unannounced on a late Friday night (2 to 3 o’clock Saturday morning) in three of the many empty and apparently abandoned shop spaces in a formerly flourishing commercial area. Each shop was lit with coloured lights so to stand out from the surrounding dark windows, and three couples, one in each space, danced slowly and silently in the empty but messy and dirty rooms without making contact with people passing outside in the street.

Loughborough is a university town with a huge student population. Friday nights are generally crowded in the town centre, with students going out to clubs and returning home to their accommodations late in the night. The dancers were meant as an image of a ‘last dance’ at the end of a party, commenting both on the concrete moment and context, and on the more general economic situation Europe is facing at the moment, which affects most of all its young population.

Performancen, som fikk tittel fra et lysskilt utenfor en stengt nattklubb, fant sted uannonsert en sen fredagskveld (fra kl. 2 til kl. 3 natt til lørdag) i tre av de mange tomme og tilsynelatende forlatte butikklokalene i det som en gang var en blomstrende handlegate. Hvert vindu var lyssatt med farget lys for å skille seg ut fra de omkringliggende mørke vinduene. Tre par, ett i hvert vindu, danset sakte og stille i de tomme, rotete og skitne rommene uten å etablere kontakt med forbipasserende på gaten utenfor.

Loughborough er en universitetsby med en stor studentbefolkning. På fredagskveldene er sentrum i byen vanligvis fullt av studenter på vei til og fra utesteder helt til de går hjem på campusen sent på natten. Danserne var ment som et bilde på ’den siste dansen’ på slutten av en fest. De var en kommentar både til den konkrete situasjonen de befant seg i der og da, og til den økonomiske situasjonen Europa befinner seg i for øyeblikket, som først og fremst berører de yngre generasjonene.
