We Said Fire

The beautiful, historic Theatre Hall in Rjukanhuset frames this performance. For an entire working week, Heier reads aloud from selected books from the unique book collection of The Red Library at Rjukan. The texts have been selected in collaboration with the librarians and the readings are open to the public every day from 9.00 to 16.00.

The Red Library is a collection of international socialist literature built by librarian Henrik J. Hjartøy in the period 1917 – 1936. It consists of around 8,000 titles and describes visions and plans for a future that never materialized. During WWII, large parts of the collection were hidden away, and The Red Library today contains a number of unique copies of books that otherwise went lost in the nazi book burnings. By retrieving these texts and giving them a physical voice, Heier wants to reactivate the poetic and political potential they still contain. Are they still relevant to our time, or have they fallen asleep for good?

Den vakre, historiske Teatersalen i Rjukanhuset rammer inn performancen. I en hel arbeidsuke leser Heier høyt fra den unike boksamlingen til Det røde biblioteket på Rjukan.Tekstene er valgt ut i samarbeid med bibliotekarene og opplesningene er åpne for publikum hver dag fra 9.00 til 16.00.

Det Røde Biblioteket er en samling internasjonal sosialistisk litteratur. Det er grunnlagt og bygget opp av bibliotekar Henrik J. Hjartøy i perioden 1917 – 1936. Samlingen består av rundt 8000 titler og beskriver visjoner og planer for en fremtid som aldri ble noe av. Under andre verdenskrig ble store deler av samlingen gjemt bort, og Det Røde Bibliotek inneholder i dag en rekke unike kopier av bøker som ellers gikk tapt i de nazistiske bokbrenningene.Ved å hente frem disse tekstene og gi dem en fysisk stemme, ønsker Heier å aktivere det poetiske og politiske potensialet de fortsatt inneholder.Er de stadig relevante for vår tid, eller har de sovnet for godt?
